The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
Composer Paul Cantelon’s hauntingly beautiful theme for The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, a film by Julian Schnabel, based on the French autobiography Le Scaphandre et le Papillon by Jean-Dominique Bauby. The film depicts Bauby’s life after December 8, 1995 and flashbacks from his extravagant life beforehand, when he suffered from a stroke that left him paralyzed from the neck down (a condition known as locked-in syndrome.) After the stroke, doctors stitched up Bauby’s right eye due to the possibility of it getting infected. Using only his left eye to blink, Bauby communicated with a writer allowing him to write his autobiography. This film was warmly received, winning awards at the Golden Globes, the BAFTA Awards, and the Cannes Film Festival, and being nominated for four Academy Awards.
